You cannot think your way to being a good person

Moral philosophy is mostly the study of how to justify what we were already going to do. I have read the trolley problem literature and it has never once helped me be kinder to a specific person in front of me. What does help is habit, proximity and being watched by people whose opinion I care about. This is uncomfortable because it means goodness is closer to fitness than to knowledge. You don't decide to be good, you train for it, and you get worse at it when you stop practising.
